In the early stages of His ministry, when Jesus learned in Judea that a rumor was spreading among the Pharisees saying that He was collecting more disciples than St. John and that He was baptizing them, He set out from Judea to Galilee, by way of Samaria. At noon, He seated Himself by Jacob's Well, in Sychar. His disciples had gone to buy food when a Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well. Jesus asked her to give Him some water to drink. Because the Jews had no dealings with the Samaritans, she said: "You are a Jew, how is that you ask me, a Samaritan woman, to give you to drink?" He said to her: "If only you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for water to drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water." She said: "You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep, from where will you get living water?" Their conversation
continued, and when she realized that He knew hidden things, she said: "I see that you are a prophet," and added, "I know that the Messiah that is called Christ is coming". He revealed to her: "I that speak to you am He." The woman went and told the people of the city. Many Samaritans came, and when they had spoken to Him they believed Him and invited Him to their houses, where He spent two days despite the Jews' rejection of the Samaritans at the time(John IV).
